Historical Summary

Collins Park Hotel lies within a hotel square bounded by Washington Avenue on the west, 21st Street to the north, Park Avenue to the east, and 20th Street to the south. Seven of the buildings on the square have been neglected for more than 10 years standing vacant and more recently damaged by an arsonist fire. Damage was caused to the Tyler Apartment Hotel amongst others.

Architectural Description

This is a 3-story hotel in the Art Deco style with Streamlined Moderne influences built in 1940. The foundation is spread footing. Exterior walls are stucco. The building has a flat with parapet roof. Currently the building is under construction and does not have any windows, just openings of where they used to be. There is a single-story, full-span open porch. A porch is located on the front facade of the building facing 21st Street featuring terrazzo floors and an elaborate concrete stone balustrade. Th primary entryway is located on the east end of the north facade facing 21st Street. The entrance is surrounded by an elaborate detail stone pilasters and oolitic limestone. Asymmetrical front facade; stepped ziggurat parapet wall; continuous overhangs above windows and eyebrows; protruding vertical mass; stone balustrade on front porch; terrazzo floors; bas relief panels; rounded corners. A proposed private renovation is underway of the seven out of eight buildings on this city block, a proposed plan to save the building facades and build on the inside of the square is proposed. The builder is recorded as P. J. Davis Construction Company. The architect is recorded as Albert Anis.
